A brief history
In 1526, Fatahillah, sent by the the empire of Demak, attacked the port of Sunda Kelapa in the Hindu kingdom of Pajajaran, later called Jayakarta. the city is only 15 hectares wide and has a traditional Javanese port layout,in 1619,the VOC destroyed Jayakarta under commandJan Pieterszoon Coen, One year later, the VOC built a new city called Batavia in honor of Batavieren, the Dutch ancestor.
The city is centered around the east bank of the Ciliwung River, which is now the Fatahillah Square.
The inhabitants of Batavia called (Batavianen) which came to be known as the tribe (Betawi) consisted of creole ethnics who were descended from various ethnic groups inhabiting Batavia.
in 1635,the city extended to the west bank of the Ciliwung River, home to the ruins of the former Jayakarta, it was designed in a European Dutch style complete with a fortress (Kasteel Batavia),city walls, canals, and the city is arranged in several blocks separated by canals.
The city of Batavia was completed in 1650 and later became the VOC headquarters in the East Indies.
The channel was filled with the appearance of a tropical plague within the city walls because of poor sanitation and the city area began to expand south after the epidemics of 1835 and 1870,when it pushed many people out of the narrow city towards the Weltevreden area (now the area around the lapangan merdeka).
Batavia later became the administrative center of the Dutch East Indies.
In 1942,during the Japanese occupation, Batavia changed its name to Jakarta and still functions as the capital of Indonesia until now.
In 1972 the Governor of Jakarta,Mr Ali Sadikin, issued a decree that officially made Kota Tua a historical heritage site.
The governor's decision is aimed at protecting the architectural history of the city or at least the remaining buildings in the center of the capital city of Jakarta.
